Benedict Cumberbatch stars on the cover of Time magazine

You know you've arrived when you make it on to the front cover of Radio Times – but US magazine Time is pretty good too... And now Benedict Cumberbatch has done the double...

The Sherlock star will appear on the front of the iconic American weekly at the end of this month, joining the ranks of stars ranging from Michael Jackson to Julia Roberts, and fellow Brits including Kate Winslet and Daniel Day Lewis.

Buenos Aires-born photographer Paola Kudacki has captured shots of actresses Jane Fonda and Salma Hayek among others but admits she was “excited” about photographing Cumberbatch.

Most recently seen promoting his latest film The Fifth Estate (in which he plays WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange), Cumberbatch will soon voice the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Kudacki explains that it was important to capture the “intensity of his face but also the quietness.”

According to Time, the photographer even managed to touch Cumberbatch’s famous locks, reaching over to ruffle his coiffe and stealing “one snap before a stylist restored his careful waves.”

Cumberbatch brought many of his own clothes with him to the shoot, which he can be seen layering on in the behind-the-scenes video below. He even stops to have a picture or two with the photographer.

Kudacki notes of the cover shot, “He’s looking into the camera, very confidently, but there’s something kinda broken. It’s kinda like when he says he likes to bring humanity to the character.” She also observed, “I think he’s very respectful of the characters he’s playing.”
