Daniel Radcliffe talks Woman In Black, new projects, and more in new interview!

Daniel Radcliffeis resigned to years of criticism about anything he does after Harry Potter. Playing the character for the past decade has given him an estimated personal wealth of £42 million but also a healthy dose of scepticism about how good an actor he is.

I started to bolden everything, but I stopped because I think you should read all of it, and if I'd kept boldening all the text, the whole article would have been in bold by the end. Dan talks about his godson, his upcoming projects, andThe Woman In Black. Basically, he's flawfree as usual.

Still only 22 years old, the sparky actor realises on one side Harry fans will hate him being in anything but the series, while those who weren’t that bothered reckon he’s good for nothing but the magical tales.

Currently living in New York while he stars in Broadway musical How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Daniel is promoting his first post-Harry Potter film,The Woman in Black.

It is a terrifying horror he calls his first grown-up film and in which he plays a father.

He should be glad he’s able to find work that isn’t Potter-related. But he admitted:“Everything I do at this stage will come under criticism, and will be a bit of a risk, no matter what the part is, how safe or how dangerous, or how it’s perceived as being.”

All he can do, he reckons, is surround himself with good people he can learn from.

Daniel became an instant worldwide star aged just 11 when he was chosen to play boy wizard Harry Potter.

Since 2001’s first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, there have been another seven movies based on JK Rowling’s books.

As he matured he dipped his toe into other characters in December Boys and telly film My Boy Jack, both in 2007.

But since Deathly Hallows Part 2 finished filming last year he’s been on his own.

According to Daniel, there was no pressure or over-thinking about his next project and said: “There wasn’t a huge amount of consideration. I take these decisions very rationally.

“The thing is, whenever I see actors talking about this kind of thing - I’m trying to avoid saying it - is looking like I’ve got a 50-year plan.

“It’s not like we sit at home, mapping out how things are going to go. It’s just that this great script came in and had a really cool, young, exciting director attached to it with a screenwriter who I’m a big fan of.”

He chose period supernatural film The Woman in Black, made by horror kings Hammer Films, as his first post-Potter film because his character, Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer, is older than Harry and also a father.

He said: “I wanted to do a film where people get involved in the film, it’s not about me.

“That’s not really what it’s about, although I’m the main character, but it’s about the film as a whole.

“That, for me, is what people will like about this film. They might be going in thinking, ‘oh, we are going to see Harry Potter do his new film’, but 10 minutes in, they won’t care about any of that. They are going to want to watch the film for what it is.

“I’m playing a father, which automatically is a bit of a leap for some people, but I don’t quite understand why.

“I think we put Arthur’s age at about 24, 25, with a five-year-old son, which is completely conceivable in the modern day, and even more so in the late 1800s, when this is set.

“And so it was perfect in that sense, but it also wasn’t so different that people were going to start saying, ‘oh, he’s now just trying too hard to separate himself’ and all that rubbish.”

Daniel read the script for The Woman in Black two hours after doing his last shot on Potter.

He grinned: “When I was doing all the press things with Potter, they must have been like, ‘oh you must have been really sad’.

“Yeah, but I was reading a script, with hopefully another job, two hours later – so I was quite excited.”

His son in the film is played by his actual godson Mischa.

He is the son of Thea Sharrock, who directed Daniel in his stage debut, Equus. It was the actor who suggested the youngster go for the part of Arthur’s son.

Mischa in turn thinks working on the film was a game.

Daniel explained: “We were on a night shoot and it was 10 o’clock at night and it was cold.

“He was not happy and he was not having any of it, and wanted to go home.

“I said, ‘Mischa, no, it’s okay, we will make it a game, I really need you to help me by doing this.’ So he thinks he’s doing me a favour, which is awesome, but he’s got a really great attitude towards it, because he’s now just fantastically arrogant about it.

“He’ll go, ‘Yes, I’m probably going to better than you in the film Dan.’

“I’m like, ‘Yes Mischa, you probably are. But he’s fantastic.”

For all his bluster about not thinking about it, Daniel sounds like he is thinking about how he can move on.

He has told the Record in the past that he understands he will forever be known as Harry Potter but hopes to have a long, rewarding career creating new characters as well.

With Deathly Hallows Part 2 being released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 2 and likely to be one of the big retail sellers of the year, the film hasn’t disappeared all together.

And certainly he and the other young cast, in particular Rupert Grint and Emma Watson who played Ron and Hermione, are close to his thoughts as are other cast members such as Tom Felton, who played Draco.

He said: “We are all just very supportive of each other, as you would expect I suppose.

“They all come and see me and I’m excited. Rupe has just been finishing a film, Tom has got loads of films coming out as well as Planet of the Apes, Emma has just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower. We all keep in touch.”

When Daniel talks about coming to see him, he is referring to his second Broadway show, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which is making $1million a week since he took over the role of J. Pierrepont Finch in February this year.

New York has always been good to Daniel. In 2008 he showed he was more than just Harry Potter when he took a risk playing a damaged boy in Equus, which required a full frontal.

Daniel will be performing How To Succeed until January 1 when Glee star Daniel Criss takes over and after him it will be Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers.

Next year he’s hoping to pack in even more films, although he won’t be doing the rumoured role in Seth Rogen’s Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse.

But he is still hoping for a comedy role.

He said: “There are lots of things lined up for next year, and one of them is very funny.

“But I would love to do Shakespeare, I’d love to do Orton. But what I’d love to do more than anything else is a new play that’s the one really creative process that I’ve not been involved in.”

● Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is out on DVD/Blu-ray on December 2. The Woman is Black is out on February 10.
