Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed Movie Finds A Writer

via glooce

Michael Fassbender has been attached to star in a big screen adaptation of the video game Assassin's Creed for months, but only now are have they completed the search for someone to write the words that he will perform. Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the film arm of the France-based video game developer Ubisoft, has hired Michael Lesslie to script the upcoming movie.

THR notes that Lesslie is an accomplished playwright, having most recently written Prince of Denmark, a sorta-prequel to William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The play was performed last year at the National Theater in England. His experience in film is more limited, having only credits in shorts, making Assassin's Creed his feature debut.

The story follows a character named Desmond Miles who was trained as a killer before rejecting the lifestyle and becoming a bartender. A mysterious organization known as Abstergo Industries finds and kidnaps him and forces him to use a device that allows him to relive the lives of his assassin ancestors. As he relives their memories he goes on missions and collects artifacts. In addition to starring Fassbender will also be producing the movie with Conor McCaughan. New Regency is now working with Ubisoft to find more producers as well as a director for the project. Surprisingly their hope is to have the movie in theaters before the end of the year.

Assassin's Creed is currently one of the most popular video game franchises going and is the premiere title is Ubisoft's library. The first game was released in 2007 and the latest, Assassin's Creed III came out in October of last year.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Tom Hardy are teaming up to produce an untitled animal-trafficking drama set up at Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Hardy came up with the idea, inspired by friends who are former Special Forces operatives and went on to become anti-poacher fighters in South Africa and other nations.

The goal, say sources, is to make a movie in the vein of Traffic, Steven Soderbergh’s multistory take on the various impacts of the war on drugs. In this case, the story would look at everything from the ground war on poachers in the African savannah to how animal material ends up in the fashion houses of Paris. It's unclear whether DiCaprio, Maguire or Hardy would act in the movie.

A search for a writer has begun.

DiCaprio and Maguire are lifelong pals but rarely have worked together, though they both are starring in The Great Gatsby for Warners, which is set for release in summer 2013.

DiCaprio also is longtime animal-rights activist. Last year, he became the spokesman for a campaign to protect elephants organized by the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Hardy is one of the studio’s new favorite actors, coming off his notable appearances in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception (alongside DiCaprio). Hardy is starting to become active as a producer, having recently set up an untitled biker project at Warner Bros.
